Rock Me, Baby – Sugar Pie DeSanto, by Elaine Bonow

This just in from Elaine Bonow:

“I think it is so weird that she is a cousin of Etta James and after all this time I never really heard of her. I loved this video because she is so cute and hip with that shirtwaist dress on and all.”

This from Chicago Blues historian, John Siscoe: “[This version of] Rock Me is from 1964, American Folk Blues Festival tour. Sources say England, but what city is unknown. Hubert Sumlin guitar, Clifton James drums, Sunnyland Slim, piano. I went back to the clip. Yes, that really is Hubert Sumlin, after all, and that could well be Clifton James. The piano player is invisible, so why not Sunnyland. And Willie Dixon, of course, on the bass.”

East Portland Blog adds: Here’s an excellent Sugar Pie DeSanto career retrospective from Ed Ward on Fresh Air: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=128845529&ps=cprs
