What has become the most overplayed anthem in the history of team sports, Queen’s “We Are The Champions” (from 1977’s News of The World) is arguably the British quartet’s best-selling and most widely known single – and I’m including “Bohemian Rhapsody” in my calculations. Shot in jaw-droppingly clear high-def during the era shortly after Freddie Mercury came out of the closet and started looking like one of the Village People (I’m guessing this is from around 1979), this live video of “Champions” highlights the showmanship and technical perfection that made Queen such an amazing live band. Mercury’s vocals are pitch perfect and mesh so well with backing vocals by Queen drummer Roger Taylor. Some additional footage of Brian May and John Deacon in action would have been nice, but you can’t have everything. Certainly it’s obvious from this clip that we will likely never see another vocalist/front man quite like Freddie Mercury. God Save the Queen.
