Mark Knopfler – Theme to Local Hero

.

He wasn’t the greatest of all time, but he may have been the prettiest. Mark Knopfler’s solos, in Dire Straits and elsewhere, were/are always the most melodic, the clearest, the brightest, the kind you’d most like to take home to Mum. He had/has at least four personas, all of them entertaining: the mellifluous athleticist, Telegraph Road, the folkie gone wild, Romeo and Juliet, the accessible atmospheric, Local Hero (above), and the accidental pop star, Sultans of Swing and Money for Nothing.

Rich Horton adds:

“No convincing necessary here. Knopfler has the knack for writing 3-4 chord melodies and turning them into symphonies. Plus, he’s a gifted lyricist. Sheesh. It’s not garage rock, and it’s not prog; it’s Knoplfrock, and I’m a believer.”

Randy Rendfeld adds:

“Knopfler was on Garrison Keillor’s radio show awhile back, and Keillor offered him a job: write three songs a week and come on the show and perform them. The world would be a better place with Knopfler on the radio every Saturday night.”
