Nils Lofgren is probably best known for his work with Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band. There is no doubt he excelled in both roles, but he also has a fine legacy as a solo performer.
Lofgren is widely regarded as one of the best rhythm guitarists in the history of rock. He’s also well known as a lead guitarist. This combination is unusual, as has been Nils’ career. He’s had underground radio songs like the seminal “Keith Don’t Go” and the early MTV hit “Across the Tracks” (complete with mini tramp). But he’s never had widespread acceptance as a solo artist.
I’d like to suggest that this is because his character didn’t allow for too much characterization. Nils has been one of those guys who A&R people just never know how to promote. He is a consummate musician who has never stooped to self promotion, on record or on stage. For Nils, the music has always mattered more than the packaging.
“Cry Tough” pretty much sums it all up. It’s an awesome song that should have been (should be) heard by a whole lot of people, but Nils isn’t going to bend over backward to make that happen.
