Sergei Isupov at SOFA 2010: the Hidden Underside of Arts in Chicago, by Betsy Youngquist, Celebrity Guest Blogger

.

So, there I was at SOFA-Chicago (International Sculpture Objects & Functional Art Fair) last month exhibiting my work and not selling much when an employee of Ferrin Gallery, Lauren Levato, purchased a small beaded flower of mine. It is possible that I started gushing about the work of my favorite artist Sergei Isupov, who is represented by Ferrin, when Lauren asked if I had ever seen the underside of Sergei’s work. Of course I hadn’t. I only observe from a distance as I can’t afford Sergei’s work and feel that fact must be evident. Lauren offered to “lift” Sergei’s pieces for me and my SOFA experience went from disappointing to spectacular. (The video below will show you what we found beneath and behind Sergei Isupov’s works.)

I got to know Sergei’s work at SOFA a dozen years ago and was mesmerized by his 3-dimensional ceramic forms covered with 2-dimensional imagery. Much like Horton in Dr. Suess’s beloved book, I peered into a strange new world, rich with meaning. Rarely does art touch me so.

Sergei’s new work is softer as he explores what it is to be a new father, and a husband. It is a poetic softness that continues to exemplify the strength of Sergei’s work, which through my lens is the delight and humor found in the ever expanding world of human experience.
