Adele was one of a small glut of female singers that came out of nowhere to huge acclaim since around 2008 (see also Duffy). BRIT (performing arts) school, posted demos on youtube, millions of hits on the internet, next thing she is the BRIT Awards (not the same as the school) Critics Choice, then chart topping singles and albums. Her soul pop ain’t really for the indie kids, but she’s got an air of a genuine suburban London girl, some authenticity, and I hold her in some affection even if I only ever hear her on the TV or the radio
