“Art triumphs over tragedy, music can heal us, can repair us, can take us to another dimension…”
– Kerry Candaele, summarizing the message of Beethoven’s Ninth
I found a fascinating documentary project on Kickstarter today. With 11 days left, they’re quite close to securing funding.
It’s a feature length film about the impact of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony on listeners. Director Kerry Candaele describes it this way, “Filmed on five continents and in 12 countries, “Following The Ninth” tracks the stories of four people whose lives have been transformed, repaired and healed by the Ninth’s message.” One of the persons featured is Billy Bragg, who was commissioned to write new English words for the Ninth’s penultimate choral work, Ode to Joy, for a London Philharmonic Performance attended by the Queen.
I look forward to seeing this when the final cut is released.
