Uh, er, ah, – How far can this reissue thing go? I guess as long as someone pays for them…

Talk about yer conspicuous consumption!
On the other hand, RJ’s an artist certainly worth fetishizing. This will sit nicely on the shelves of those who sprang for the mega-deluxe Albert Ayler and Charley Patton box sets back in the Oughts:

And at least these particular discs will play at 45 RPM! LOL
Thanks Bob,

Since a direct heir was established in 2004 to RJ’s estate
I assume the family is trying to make up for lost time and lost royalties. Can’t say that I blame them, but still, $349?

I too am glad that Claud Johnson is today, by Mississippi standards anyway, a rich man. But with the money due him from Columbia Records, and the gazillions of covers, his lawyer should find plenty of low-hanging fruit to shake down– yes, Glimmer Twins, I’m thinking of you. I agree, $349 is a bit much.

I sent a lot of you the email I received last year about the Robert Johnson recordings we have all been listening to forever possibly being about 20% too fast.
I’ve been looking and finally found a forum on which the pros and cons of this speculation are discussed.
Happy Reading,

As for RJ being speeded up, it’s certainly a great topic for a rainy afternoon. But like so much fun it’s likely to end nowhere. We can’t reconstruct what went on in those recording sessions any more than we can attend the premiere of Hamlet at the Globe Theatre, watch Van Gogh paint a landscape, or hear Beethoven conducting his Ninth Symphony. But speculation is fun and even instructive. I liked the wag [in the forum above] who said that Columbia would be delighted to sell us all a boxed set slowed down by 20%. He got that right!
