I’ve never heard anyone say much of anything bad about the Foo Fighters. I’m not a huge fan, but I admire them for their obvious, genuine love of rock n roll. Fun band to watch.
I get tired of hearing about Kurt Cobain, the legend, because to me the usual adulatory sentiments about KC are overstated and on the whole his story is just sad. It would be like everyone rooting Billie Holiday on in her depression and addiction, because the worse it is, the better she sounds. I mean, the first time I was ever really aware of Cobain, I knew it wouldn’t end well. I can’t imagine his fans were less informed as time went on. Instead, it was, “Oh, Kurt speaks to me, speaks for my generation.” Well, maybe, in terms of growing up in small towns can suck, and people can be cruel and stupid in this world. Beyond that, it was a case of a very talented man who should have never been allowed near drugs and money to buy drugs. He needed help, not a bunch of people thinking he was Jesus.
Dave Grohl picked himself up and wouldn’t let that tragedy ruin or define his life. He switched instruments… and started something he wanted to do that was really viable. Quite an accomplishment. There’s a new generation of people who half-forget Grohl was in Nirvana; heck, my mind no longer leaps to Nirvana when I see him on stage. That’s really remarkable.
