Friday afternoon July 20, I headed to the Seattle Center (home of Seattle’s iconic Space Needle) to witness Seattle’s Poorsport perform at The Bite of Seattle festival. The rain had finally stopped after dumping buckets all morning, but the clouds were still ever present and threatened to dump again at any moment. But this is Seattle even though it’s late July and I wouldn’t let the threat of rain stop me. I just held my breath and hoped for the best, stopping long enough to blow the clouds to the east where they need the rain.
Poorsport was supposed to start at three, but was delayed due to technical difficulties. Poorsport’s bassist, Ben, has to be the most energetic bass player ever! He’s all over the stage and accents his run-abouts with frequent leaps. Vocalist Kevin is just as energetic, belting out the band’s melodic pop tunes with a punk attitude. Guitarist Kyle and drummer Skeeter keep everything steady while the other two churn up a storm that had more energy than the one that threatened to drench everyone.
Poorsport play original songs with the exception of Van Morrison’s “Brown-eyed Girl” and Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Going to Take It.”
Kevin, Kyle, Ben and Skeeter put on a fabulous performance even though no one was really there. The Bite usually attracts huge crowds, but I’m sure the torrential rains and rumbling thunder of that morning were enough of a deterrent to keep people from attending. Of course three o’clock on a Friday afternoon, most people are still at work. But for those of you who didn’t have to work, shame on you for not coming. This is the Pacific Northwest and so what if it’s only sixty-six degrees and the clouds are threatening to dump buckets. Poorsport is a band worth seeing. They’re very similar to other local punk acts MXPX, but possess enough of their own unique style to not be a carbon copy. I had a great time regardless and it didn’t rain.
