Thought you might enjoy this early Christgau piece (Village Voice, Jan. 1970, see attachment), which makes some interesting points and distinctions re: what you and I now refer to as “Conceptual Panache”, and about the late-Sixties Music Biz more generally!
It’s also a nicely tart summary of the terminal phase of “Super Group Syndrome”, taken to its (il)logical conclusion by Greil Marcus, et al.
I actually own the original “I Can’t Get No Nookie” 7-inch (which I keep amongst Greil’s hallowed shelf o’ books!), as well as the eponymous LP, which enjoyed a brief second life on cd via Rhino Handmade in the early days of said “boutique” label, ca. 2003!
