Throughout the 1980s, I was obsessed with the Dream Wynndicate. I became friends with nearly every member; Dave Provost, Kendra Smith, Dennis Mehaffey, Mark Walton – and entered into a decades long mutual admiration with Steve Wynn. Our paths have crossed on both coasts and in vans, hotel rooms, stages, and bars across large chunks of Northern Europe. I’ve compiled and released his recordings and he’s played lead guitar on mine. I’ve often been one of the first to hear ‘works in progress” – and Steve appreciates my candor when I say “this is terrible.” – When I began writing Listen Whitey: the Sounds of Black Power 1965-75 he read the first draft and passed it on to his pal George Pelecanos. Anyway, I used to joke with Steve, that if the Syndicate ever got back together, I HAD to be the tour manager. They’ve left for Spain for without me, but (I’m there in spirit and rooting for new member Jason Victor) Steve did send me this photo of what he likes to read while on the road…
