Watching this video I had two trains of thought. One was how impressive this kid is in navigating and playing his instruments, while really holding his own vocally. Some have implied that the fact that Geddy Lee sings like a 12 year old boy is one of the reasons it took Rush so long to get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The other association involves how unselfconsciously he performs. This state can be cultivated by years of performance, or can be a part of the relative lack of shame that often precedes the pubescent throws of adolescence. When I was a similar age in the mid-70’s, my self and a cadre of similarly geeked-out kids (Dave L, the force behind EPB, included) envisioned the idea of performing an adaption of the Isaac Asimov short story, “The Last Question”, for a seventh grade assembly. We got to the point of scripting it, casting it, spending inordinate amounts of time recording a prog-rock sound track on cassette (there very well could have been some Rush in there along with the Pink Floyd and ELP), and even got to some version of a run through before the reality of the task was squashed by the powers that were. I look back with a mixture of disbelief and longing for a time that we could have conceived of putting ourselves out there in that way. Rock on Matt. . .
