Last week, I was in Sacramento and saw Before Midnight at the one theater in the city where it played. Those who have seen Before Sunrise and Before Sunset will find the format familiar. The setting is gorgeous–this time in the south of Greece–and the conversation is engaging and intense, with a few more participants this time. The big screen is nice to appreciate the visuals, but I missed having the DVD player to repeat bits of missed dialogue. The feel of Before Midnight is less romantic than the first two movies, but that is to be expected since the two main characters, Jesse and Celine, now have nine years’ worth of baggage from their relationship to unpack. Nonetheless, every word in this movie is just as worth hearing as in the first two, and I plan to buy the DVD when it comes out so I can remember them all.
