Guy Pearce is a fantastic actor, one of the greats of the last quarter century. He was awe-inspiring as the playboy king in The King’s Speech and spot on as an ambitious detective in LA Confidential. Now the English-born Australian is bringing his talents to pop music with excellent– dare we say Roxy Music/Brian Ferry-influenced– results. His debut record, Broken Bones will be released in Australia and New Zealand on Nov 7th, worldwide in 2015. “Taste” (above) is the second single to be released from that upcoming work. “Storm,” the first, released a few weeks ago, is below.
“Taste” is one of Pearce’s favorite tracks from Broken Bones. ‘”Taste” digs into that illusive thing we call “identity”, and who we think we are, versus who we actually are – whatever that even means,” he says. “We’re so malleable and contradictory at times, it’s often hard to be objective.”
Several savvy film and theatre producers incorporated Pearce’s tunefulness into their work. Then, in 2009 he sang in the Melbourne Theatre Company’s production of Poor Boy, written by Matt Cameron and Tim Finn, featuring the sublime songs of Finn. In the band was drummer and percussion player Michael Barker, who expressed an interest in hearing recordings Pearce had been secretly making in a studio at his Melbourne home
“Michael made me realise the value in finishing songs and completing things generally. I think I’d underestimated the negative effects of working on stuff that nobody ever heard,” says Pearce. With the help of musical friends and cohorts came the process of producing Broken Bones, a collection of songs that bear Pearce’s heart and soul.
