I love this tune:
The self-titled album from NYC-based indie pop band Stargroves is rich with ambitious compositions and catchy melodies.
One highlight from the record is “Half Awake in Reykjavík,” which glides along with a perky piano loop that gives the song a theatrical quality, making it sound as though it could have been plucked directly from a movie.
Initially, the focus is on the words of singer Teddy Watson, who creates vivid imagery with lines like, “Buried in light snow / Chasing the strange, shivering lights.” The arrangement grows more layered as strings and drums kick in and the song builds to a musical peak.
“Half Awake in Reykjavík” is one of the more straightforward pop songs on the album, but it still packs plenty of surprises into its four minutes. Nearly each time Watson finishes a verse, the music moves in a new direction, capped off by a kaleidoscope of synths and guitars leading into a cinematic closing section that twinkles like stars in the Icelandic night sky.
