This is the old Yuengling mansion on upper Mahantango Street in Pottsville, PA. It and it’s full block of stables and grounds and such were donated to the city some decades ago – probably to the huge relief of the Yuengling family. It was given to the Schuylkill County Council for the Arts who back in the early 80’s gave artists grants of studio space and also used it for gallery shows and what not. Cousin Denise had a studio up there in the tippy top right attic window. It was very lively then with resident artists and gallery shows and concerts on the grounds and after hours parties with partying artists and what not. I believe it is mostly a special events venue now. Most arts organizations do find it difficult to deal with artists, I believe.
Oh, good story about wrought iron fence surrounding mansion. During WW 1 or II the gov asked all the home owners on Mahantango Street to donate their wrought iron fences to be melted down for the war effort. Yuengling was only property owner who refused saying he did not want his fence killing his countrymen. Story entirely apocryphal. I heard it from a relatively drunk artist at one of Denise’s studio parties. There are no other wrought iron fences on Mahantango Street now though!
