J’adore this modern pop tune from French singer Cheraze, “Promets pas la lune” (“Don’t promise the moon”). As far as I’m concerned, she IS the new Edith Piaf, the modern focus of sartorial elegance and a lady who knows hats. The tune is both boldly global and gamely gallic. The lithe hands of Cheraze float and glide more gracefully than the balletic legs of Degas’ dancers. When rapper Tunisiano pops in, he looks more like a resistance fighter ready to smuggle Allied pilots back to Dover via his fishing boat in the channel than the street-fighting North African anticolonialist which his nom de guerre suggests. All in all this itty bitty ditty is a rousing good time.
