Has the news of the greatest underdog story in all sports reached you? Leicester City have been perennial doormats in the English Premier League, when they haven’t been relegated to the second or even third tiers. This season most predicted them to finish near last and be relegated again. They were 5,000-to-1 odds to win the league.
Well, with a humble, affable, 64-year-old coach once called the “Tinkerman” and a low-cost squad, the Foxes surprised everyone and beat everyone. They were crowned champions today. There are so many fine articles about this amazing story, I don’t want to compete. None can really put it into perspective — the ’69 Mets are probably the closest. So I’ll do what all lofty writers do when penned in a corner. I’ll write limericks.
There once was a team named Leicester (it’s pronounced “lester”)
Whose title hopes would always fester
Along came the Tinker
With an unclenchable sphincter
Suddenly the Foxes turned out to be bester.
The team was called Leicester City.
Historically they’d been quite shitty.
With Jamie and Riyad
They trounced the odds.
And the Foxes turned out to be pretty.
