This one’s one of the best podcasts I’ve heard in a while in terms of knowledgeability and candor. Mark Salter was on McCain’s staff for a long time, including during the 2008 campaign. One of the points he makes draws from that experience, when they knew for the last couple of months that they were likely to lose the election, and yet McCain and his staff still had to put in 20-hour days and do it all with a smile. If Trump were to be in that situation, grinding though a campaign that looked hopeless, Salter thinks he wouldn’t have the psychological fortitude to handle it. He might just go to pieces, raging against the dying of the light.
He also mentioned that every Republican candidate for office will now have to answer two questions:
1. Do you support Donald Trump?
Then, after Trump lets loose with one of his impolitic comments:
2. Do you still support Donald Trump?
