This is the only good Blair Walsh story of 2017: my friend’s 7 year old son Max is a huge fan of The Seahawks and the Cougars. Last night my buddy looked worried at Leny’s Place as the Cougs were struggling through the Apple Cup, and I asked why a guy from Detroit was taking this WSU loss so hard.
He said this, “My son is 7 years old but he’s a huge Coug fan and he’s watching at home. He loves the Cougs and the Seattle Seahawks. When the Seahawks won the Super Bowl he was 3. I had to sit down with him then and explain that the Super Bowl is a very big deal and that it’s not realistic to expect them to get to the mountain top every year.
My son watches that Super Bowl over and over like some kids watch Frozen. He knows every play.”
Sports is full of hard and true life lessons. This proud father told his son about how he has always loved The Lions and always will, even if it was a lifetime of disappointment. Because he is Detroit strong and the struggle is a real.
Well last week when the game once again rested its fate upon Blair Walsh’s shoulders, this sweet little 7 year old looked at the doubt in his father’s eyes. He clasped his hands, his eyes glued on screen, as he bravely fought the urge to cover his eyes.
Moments after Blair came up short, and his father explained to his disappointed son that Seattle can’t afford a new kicker this season, the boy went into his room and emerged with his entire life savings. He authorized his Daddy to give the Hawks all $11 to his name, so the Seahawks can sign a reliable field goal kicker that won’t break the heart of this tiny 12, and make his daddy sad.
His father had to explain that $11 was not quite enough, but the kid has a point. If we all gave $11 we might be able to buy The Seahawks a real field goal kicker.
