Jordani Sarreal to Convene Music Publishing & Copyright Workshop March 11 in Tacoma, by Davin Michael Stedman

My friend Jordani Sarreal is putting together a music publishing and copyright workshop that is so incredibly timely for me. As publishing and the ownership of our albums is increasingly in our own possession, rather than Record companies, most of us have no idea what to really do in 2018.

I will be attending her workshop and I am going to be interviewing her for East Portland Blog about some of questions I have, that I can never quite find all the right answers for.

Here are a couple fascinating questions that came up in Jamaica on the cusp of my breakthrough hit, ‘Free Your Mind’ hitting radio stations, as I cut more potential hit singles for my album, West Indian Rock.

How do we properly and officially share some publishing with session players and investors that have gone the extra mile for us and our project?

How the heck does it really break down with sales vs publishing on streaming services?

Do we still copyright indivudual songs the old fashion way with Library or Congress and what if we don’t?

Is it better for me to publish my new music with Sherlock Soul and Anthony Red Rose with European performance right organizations if the National Association of Broadcasters refuses to pay American musicians for radio play because they called radio play exposure for musicians that they never actually promote?

This last question may need some more background information, but if you are an American musician and you figure out what I am talking about you will throw a chair through a window. Because it is insane and it has cost American musicians millions and it is part of why many great American players left music and got day jobs, whether they realize this or not.

You’ll hear more about musician, songwriter , producer, engineer, and studio boss Jordani Sarreals as her workshop nears. She literally and figuratively wears so many hats. She fronts Jordani & The Sun Kings and frequently collaborates with Tacoma greats like Jesse Turcotte and Stephanie Anne Johnson.

For the last eight years her job co-managing Pacific Recording Studio has given her immense practical experience in publishing as an independent artist and as a producer.
