Laura Bettinson began performing in 2012, when one of her early south London gigs caught the attention of Nigel Godrich; together with him and Beck drummer Joey Waronker, she ended up forming one third of the electronic pop group Ultraísta. Encouraged by Godrich’s confidence in her unique and savvy tastes, Bettinson began creating her own firebrand of “bold, ballsy pop music” under the monkier FEMME. Her 2014 single “Fever Boy” found a fan in CharlieXCX (who invited her the join her US tour), along with several major record labels. But Bettinson found herself uninterested in the executives who wanted to mould her project, and stuck to her independent path. Today, FEMME continues her artistry in DIY fashion, with total creative control of the writing, production, and visuals that compliment her music.
