The slate for the 2018 inductee class into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has been announced. I have winced over the years regarding artists who have been inducted; Joan Jet and Green Day come to mind. I cannot find the criteria for induction on the HOF’s website. Longevity, influence, or an ongoing successful contribution would be factors, I think, which are all capricious and obviously open to interpretation.
Anyway, the 2018 body of inductees includes, and my opinion is:
1. Janet Jackson. Nothing special with her.
2. Kraftwerk. Nothing special with this German techno band.
3. Def Leppard. Talk about scraping the barrel (!) though they did have a rockin’ tune early in their career, i.e., Let It Go.
4. MC5. Very short-lived rockers from Detroit.
5. John Prine. Just because he is over 60 does should not be a default for induction.
7. Devo. I LOVED this band in high school after seeing them on SNL. They were definitely creative…just not much of a body of work.
8. Stevie Nicks. She is already rightly in the HOF as a member of Fleetwood Mac. However, I think she is nowhere close to an induction as a solo artist.
9. Todd Rundgren. Yeah, he’s got a couple of catchy tunes from the ’70s. Not much else in IMHO.
10. The Zombies. Nothing special there.
11. Rage Against the Machine. Zach de la Rocha had an excellent delivery and the band was hot for two albums, then nothing.
12. The Cure. Like Rage, they shined for a short while. the Cure had a great MTV video and song, Lullaby, that I adore:
13. LL Cool J. Yeah, I bought his 1985 album called “I Can’t Live Without My Radio” and liked it. Nothing else special about this artist.
14. Radiohead. This band sucks.
15. Roxy Music. An eclectic band, but nothing extraordinary.
16. Rufus and Chaka Khan. She has a fantastic voice. I saw her…I stood in the front row, center, when she toured with Prince. It was a fantastic show, and I miss Prince. I just do not know much about RCK.
To summarize, I would not vote for any of this group of nominees. If I would pick one, it would be Chaka Khan.
