Ilu finds influences in the chiming linear sounds of Faust IV, the classic album by Krautrock pioneers Faust and in the New Wave and early New Romantic movements. Also, certain flourishes found within ‘Systems Of Romance’ by Ultravox can be heard in ilu’s delicate, yet bold and unafraid second single ‘Jaanus’ (above). Ilu has chosen to keep ‘Jaanus’ uncluttered, thereby allowing the song to reveal itself within specific unconventional musical structures so that the listener is embraced by the song’s sadness.
‘Jaanus’ deals, as the band explains….”with loss, with grief that robs you of words to try and explain or even comprehend. ‘Jaanus’ is an act of communion, of reaching out. This is a love song for a love that cannot die.”
As with all ilu material, the recording of ‘Jaanus’ was started in Tallinn, Estonia and finished by Tim Lewis (Spiritualized, Julian Cope, Coil) at Aerial Studios in rural Carmarthenshire, Wales.
Mastering was done by Iwan Morgan (Euros Childs, Gruff Rhys, Cate Le Bon, Sweet Baboo).
