For this recording ElectroBluesSociety went back to basics and teamed up with Mississippi bluesman Boo Boo Davis. Together they revisited classic Chicago blues and recorded seven songs. These will all be released as singles during the coming months.
Here is the fourth track from that very successful recording session. This time it’s a Howlin’ Wolf classic with a little ‘electrofication’.
Life is to be lived in the moment and not lost. Therefore you must listen to this wonderful tune. The rhtythm section is scraped from the rock of ages itself.
For whom was the Rock of Ages cleft? Well… “Rock of Ages, cleft for me. Let me hide myself in thee…”
These musicians have captured the perfect harp sound. You can hear tin molecules stand up straight inside the harp’s reed and assume a fighting stance before they’re forced to surrender and vibrate.
When queried as to how they were able to do it, Jan Mittendorp replied, “I think Boo Boo’s voiced harp playing is a direct link to the source of the blues. He has the same background as many of the artists that are now “blues legends”. He grew up under very bad conditions in Mississippi in the 40’s and what you hear is hard times. We just capture that and try to go with his flow, everything recorded in one take live. At the mixing stage we add some technical stuff that is available in 2020. I am sure the guys in the fifties and sixties would have used similar things if it would have been available.”
