One might quibble with the details of his purchase of the Giants in 1992, but one point is absolutely certain. If he had not had the vision and acumen to build Pacific Bell Park (later AT&T and now Oracle Park) with private financing, the San Francisco Giants would either have fled the city later or have occupied the same kind of purgatory as the Oakland A’s in their concrete mausoleum. The three World Series championships that broke a half-century drought would not have happened. If they can put a statue of Lamar Hunt outside of Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, they can certainly put one of Magowan in the neighborhood of McCovey Cove. He would deserve it as much as anyone who ever stepped onto a field in orange and black, and that includes Willie Mays.
Thanks to Magowan, fans of the San Francisco Giants had the privilege of living to see the fulfillment of their dreams. May he rest in peace.
