Esther Phillips – No Headstone on My Grave, Home Is Where the Hatred Is by Davin Michael Stedman

Confession: I am in my own head practically all the time. Writing songs is my only way out. And it’s pretty wonderful.

Songwriting is an absolutely potent magic and a pure science. If you really bare your soul, people want to listen. And if they don’t that is a tragedy that songs are actually written about.

That’s the pain in Country and Blues songs that are at their best.

To cry and nobody is listening, or worse: everybody is pretending they aren’t listening…

Maybe it’s the runner’s high talking. But this is the truth.

Also you dancing to Tragedy is an American pastime.

Esther Phillips died at UCLA Medical Center in Carson, California, in 1984, at the age of 48, from liver and kidney failure due to long-term drug abuse. Originally buried in an unmarked pauper’s grave at Lincoln Memorial Park in Compton, she was reinterred in 1985 in the Morning Light section at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills, in Los Angeles. A bronze marker recognizes her career achievements and quotes a Bible passage: “In My Father’s House Are Many Mansions” (John 14:2). – Wikipedia.

Esther Phillips’ single “‘Home Is Where the Hatred Is’ was nominated for a Grammy award in 1972. When Aretha Franklin’s “Young, Gifted, and Black” won the award, Franklin herself personally handed the award to Phillips, saying she deserved it more.” – Youtube page for “No Headstone on My Grave.”
