Today, Swedish/Ugandan singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist & dancer Pheeyownah releases her smoldering new R&B single “Scent/Sweat.” The track is off her debut album SILVER, out May 3 on Labrador Records. Pheeyownah explains: “’Scent/Sweat’ is about getting rid of the scent of someone you no longer want in your life. Even though it’s been years since you’ve departed, the scent still lingers on and haunts you and the only way to get rid of it is to sweat it out of your system.”
With atmospheric R&B harmonies and poetic lyrics in the realm of Björk, SZA, FKA Twigs and Flume, Pheeyownah explores empowerment, love, lust and insecurity every hour of every day. Born Feyona Naluzzi in southern Stockholm (the roughest, most gangsta part of Stockholm.) Pheeyownah sang gospel and discovered she wanted to be an artist at a young age. She joined the all-female Swedish dance crew JUCK in 2013 (named after the Swedish word for a grinding hip movement), provoking and exploring contemporary debates on gender, sexuality, femininity and ethnicity by moving in ways unconventional for a woman that closed minded country.
Pheeyownah provokes extremE human emotion in all of her art and this album is no exception. With rich, heavy beats infused with melodic, spacious landscapes and hints of industrial sounds with raging no-filter lyrics, it beats with mind-bending musical and ecstatic spoken interludes throughout. Produced by a strong woman, the album is about coming to terms with the fact that life doesn’t always turn out the way you want it to. In her own words, “It’s about the ups and downs of love, insecurities, self-doubt but also empowerment and finding the courage to be vulnerable without feeling less than or weak.”
