The aptly named Matthew Sweet has hit La Dolce spot on several re-memberable and re-lovable singles. Underrated most of his career, a song like “We’re the Same” was certainly crushed at time of release by whatever Pearl Jam elegy ruled the airwaves. Eddie Vedder’s stentorian voicebox captured the concurrent dolour of those years and vibed with the sound we thought best shaded the 90s at the time, while Mr. Sweet’s softer voice and singular sad-poppy guitars recreate the timbre of those times now as we listen back across the decades with our constantly revising inner-ear of nostalgia. (You’re welcome!) How is Matthew Sweet these days? We never hear, but it would be nice to know. How about the stunning retro ladies of this video? They’re in their fifties now, their children have graduated from college. At least one of them probably lives in Portland and runs a supercool niche business we all wish we’d thought of ourselves.
Thanks to Samantha Lamph and Memoir mixtapes for bringing back this 25 year old gem for another brief look-see.
