Us3r is a solo Electro Indie artist based in Seattle, WA, who began writing music under his strange moniker in 2018. His music is a combination of Funk, EDM, synth and modern Pop. Working by day in product design, Us3r spent much of 2018 immersed in technology, local arts, and cityscapes. During that time, he spent every morning and evening writing music and solidifying the sound of his debut album, 1985.
1985 is the year he was born, the music sounds like everything he listens to on a daily basis, but captured through the lens of 1980s synthesizers, reused and resampled for a modern day sound.
Us3r grew up in a musical household in Palm Springs, CA. Both his mother and uncle were touring members of the Righteous Brothers and his father works as a studio bass player. When he relocated to Seattle in 2017, the artistry and vibrancy of the area inspired him to create his current sound.
“I currently live in Seattle and I walk to work every day. I see a lot of good and bad in the city, I feel the cold, and I see the setting sun constantly. I wanted to capture the feeling of existing here – it is sometimes fun, sometimes challenging, and always real. Also I wanted this work to lyrically reflect on my childhood in California in the late 80s, early 90s. I wanted to include the sounds and styles from other artists I love. I also wanted to create an album that was honest about my outlook about friendships, places, and my attitude about life.
First, I aimed to write every song on this debut album to be able to stand up as a single. I included songs that are uptempo, downtempo, experimental, happy, sad, etc. Second, the production style of this music is very experimental. On several song, I created synthesizers from samples of my own voice and played with moving sounds around the sonic space into unexpected places. The song ‘Partition’ is the most exaggerated song that followed this technique.”
