Having completed my initial assignment “to post 25 albums in 25 days that have had a major CREATIVE impact on me” (thanks, Chris Estey), and having enjoyed said project a GREAT deal, I’ve decided to post 25 MORE, for good measure.
So, “50 albums in 50 days”, here I come. Upon completion next month, I think it will amount to a highly entertaining “map” of my musical sensibility!
As before, I’ll be posting “just album covers without any explanation”, and nominating “a different person each day to do the same”.
By the by, please feel free to follow the eventual links (in the comments) to my longtime home at EAST PORTLAND BLOG, where my dear friend (and EPB editor) Ricky has been re-posting my daily album selections (in an expansive layout where you can view ALL the variant album covers and aural media formats AT ONCE), plus a link to one song I’ve chosen to spotlight from each recording!
If you missed any along the way, want to revisit a particular post, or simply wish to listen to the songs, it’s MUCH easier to scroll back through these posts on EPB than it is on FB. Once you’re there, just click on the Tom Kipp “button”!
Today I nominate: Sarah O’Keeffe

– Tom Kipp
Coincidentally, this entry marks the FOURTH album among the 45 I’ve now posted featuring a front man (or in my case, sometime-front man and synth player!) born on January 31st:
#3: John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten, b. 1/31/1956 (Sex Pistols)
#8: Tom Kipp, b. 1/31/1963 (Ein Heit)
#17: John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten, b. 1/31/1956 (PiL)
#45: Harry Wayne Casey, b. 1/31/1951 (KC and the Sunshine Band)
So I hereby salute KC & John, my two very favorite “birthday buddies” (to borrow my mom’s wonderful term)!
Alas, I haven’t found a way to include amongst my selections such other 1/31-born musical notables as Franz Schubert, Carol Channing, Mario Lanza, Chuck Willis, Philip Glass, Daevid Allen, Charlie Musselwhite, Terry Kath, Phil Manzanera, Lloyd Cole, or Justin Timberlake! LOL
Oddly enough, although he contributed to each of Brian Eno’s other three Rock-oriented ’70s solo albums (HERE COME THE WARM JETS, TAKING TIGER MOUNTAIN, and BEFORE AND AFTER SCIENCE), Phil Manzanera (b. 1/31/1951) does NOT appear on ANOTHER GREEN WORLD (TK album post #23).
Interestingly, Phil Collins DOES appear on said LP. But although he was for many years reported as having a January 31st DOB, his current Wiki page lists Mr. Collins’ natal day as 1/30/1951.
So, no dice, Phil!
Were that not the case, he, Mr. Manzanera, and Harry Wayne Casey would have been born on the same date in history….Randy Mills: Are they a Florida funk band who found disco, or a disco band who discovered funk?
Tom Kipp: By me, an uptempo, horn-fueled, studio-bound Soul band that always had the Funk and found ways to innovate based on their unique background in South Florida and commercial ambitions.
But the key to it all was undoubtedly the songwriting/arranging prowess of the irreducible team of Harry Wayne Casey and Rick Finch, which caught the nascent Disco Zeitgeist in both subtle and profound ways!
This supreme single was their Ground Zero, and much of Golden Age Disco emanates from this collision of their song and productions ideas with George McCrae’s sublime voice.
It was Casey/Finch’s first #1 (of SIX, from 1974-79!):
Day 45:
KC and the Sunshine Band: “Boogie Shoes” (1975)
