Daystar is an amazing band I just found out about. They have strong connections to Portland and they “get it.” They live in an Apple Records state of mind. They cite the three B’s as their influences, Beatles, Badfinger and Big Star. Their new record is called, The Complete Recordings. That’s all you need to know.

This is from their bio:
From the City of Roses…And AfarPortland, Oregon is a city brimming with creativity. It’s everywhere you look; everything you hear. Each of the members of Daystar have lived in Portland for years. It’s the spiritual home of the band and influences almost everything they do. Everyone you know in Portland is in a band and every sound seemed to be represented when Daystar was first forming. Every sound except it seemed one.
Derek grew up a Beatles fanatic. He and a friend even won a Beatles trivia in Liverpool when the two were 19 years old. He grew up a John guy, believed George was the coolest, Ringo’s the greatest drummer in the world (for The Beatles), and is now firmly living the Paul life…or is it the Wild Life? It was McCartney’s solo career immediately after The Beatles that was taking up space in Derek’s head when Joel came calling.
Daystar draws inspiration from the combination of harmonies, melodies and big rock guitar sounds that made Wings the foundation for so many indie rock favorites. From ELO to Badfinger to Big Star to Elliott Smith to Zeus…the wave rises and falls but never completely goes to sea. The next wave is crashing with the release of The Complete Recordings, the first album from Daystar.
Live shows in Portland became a must-see event as the band honed its performance and drew crowds. Focused on honing their sound in club-sized venues with oversized PAs to fully represent their sound while maintaining the close connection with their growing audience, the band is very selective about where they’ll play. The plan was coming together nicely until Derek was pulled out of the city he loved and called home, returning to Michigan in the summer of 2018. For lesser bands, this might spell the end. But Daystar is no lesser band. Technology and determination allows Daystar to write, record, and book live dates with some 2,000 miles between the members. Such is their belief in the music.
