Rufus Wainwright – Cigarettes And Chocolate Milk, by Davin Michael Stedman

One of my theme songs, since it was recorded. I don’t identify with the drug addiction aspects, of course, but I certainly can relate with the traits that can get one there… and with the consequences. I’ve always been “all in” with everything – work projects, athletics (back in the day), adventures, writing, sex, love, food, whatever… not extremism, but definitely diving in wholeheartedly – albeit with discerning tastes. Like Rufus sings, “everything a little bit sweeter… a little bit harmful for me.” Take women, for example… it can’t be just any woman; it’s always had to be an extraordinary woman. That takes patience, and restraint, until such a person appears. I’ve been fortunate. Then, while love has never been a requirement, I have loved a few of them; been in love with a few more. The most extraordinary of all, for roughly 19 years and counting. And I’ve said more than once – and to more than one woman – “Thank you for being so extraordinary, for giving me the opportunity to be in love with you.” And I wasn’t blowing smoke, because there’s nothing remotely like it (or as good) in the world. Not even cigarettes and chocolate milk, also two of my cravings.
