10 years ago, in my final year at Sheffield University, I started Cool Beans – an online only radio show and club night. At the time I didn’t have much direction with regards to what I wanted to do with my life. I wasn’t that dedicated to my studies and I was spectacularly bad at any part time work I took on. With many of my closest friends convinced that I had attention deficit disorder, I figured having a crack at the stuff I was interested in would be a good thing to do.
Unbeknownst to me at the time, that decision pretty much mapped out my whole ‘career’. Everything I’ve done has been a knock on effect from that moment – DJing, working in local TV and radio, stand up comedy, events hosting, appearing on festival stages, booking gigs/tours for some of my favourite bands and all the rest. I certainly don’t have millions in the bank, but I’ve definitely had a lot of fun. And I’ve been crowned “Gloucester Services’ favourite customer” so at least I can tell that to the grandkids.
So, unbelievably Cool Beans has survived a decade. I’ll be celebrating this year with more festival appearances with the Roadshow, more nonsense powerpoint comedy sets and there’s a big Cool Beans tour on the cards for October 2020, which will mark exactly 10 years since the beginning. Big thanks to the many pals I’ve made along the way on this journey, it’s been a lot of fun. Will Cool Beans survive another 10 years? It’s hard to tell considering most climate scientists don’t think that humanity will survive another 10 years at this rate.
This post suddenly took a bleak turn didn’t it? And it’s definitely gone on long enough, I’d be very surprised if anyone has made it this far, most of you have probably got bored and continued scrolling, but if you are still reading I would like to finish off with this: do the things that you love doing, don’t be put off by setbacks and try to be nice to people.
