Bye Bye Baseball, by Davin Michael Stedman

Which pro athletes are getting still paid and which ones are going to going to be selling off those mansions?

The money gets sucked up from the lower and middle class, some of it trickles it will down. The bread, the wine,

…but Romans, they have cancelled The Circus.

It’s going to be a strange Summer. Great sporting attractions are The Master Class’ most lucrative and reliable distractions.

Let’s move beyond the gladiators, past the Chariot Races pitting the Red, The White, The Green and the Blue until Rome fell, and in Constantinople there were only two.

In Dublin a guide remarked that after the end of public executions as photographs came into focus and the unwashed began to decipher and sound out words in newspapers, men began writing down the rules of games they played as boys.

That was the end of the 19th century, though America had held one last gruesome party in 1936 in Kentucky. But the sunshine of reason showed America that it would just be better to play ball rather than heed the hang man’s call.

And every passing year, until this JUST now, through World Wars and Spanish Flu the boys of Summer carried on, making more money each year, until a bum that hit .210 could be a millionaire.

If you miss baseball, maybe get out to the sandlot and play. I’ll pretend to be Bo Jackson. You get to be Satchel Page.

You might be leading the world in strike outs. No majors, no minors, no Little League world series.

I ain’t stealing signs I am just reading the tea leaves.

This shall be known as The Great Concession.
