“Seattle, Washington’s Society of the Silver Cross’s has just released a new video for their latest single, “Dissolve and Merge,” off their debut full-length album, 1 Verse. An epic musical journey crossing over to mystical landscapes and otherworldly terrains, 1 Verse deals with concepts of life and death, shadows and light, and going beyond the veil.
Consisting of songwriters [HANDSOME] Joe Reineke and [STUNNING] Karyn Gold-Reineke, the duo score lush, bombastic, and ethereal layers of instrumentation with chant-like vocals. Their unique songwriting style is inspired by the textures and melodies of India, blending an ode to hypnosis with a touch of goth and twisted Americana. The sound has been described as “haunting, gothic Graceland,” “funeral home rock,” and even “yogic metal.” The 405 said that 1 Verse is “One of the year’s most unique and compelling debuts.”
“Dissolve and Merge” comes in the midst of the pandemic to remind us that there is a ray of hope beyond the adverse landscape; it is a call to become one with the world and to look optimistically at what the future holds, which must be better than our present. It is a “song about the wave and how it belongs to the ocean and isn’t separate from it. It soon returns to where it came from. It’s a metaphor for how we are all connected, the chords and sections of the song celebrate this. The intro descending notes/chords; the main body of the song is about life’s choices and possibilities while the outro is ascending notes and chords,” says the band.
It is a devastating, stark reminder of a deserted Seattle during the COVID-19 quarantine. It represents the old and renewed optimism that the future is going to be better than our past. While the video focuses on Seattle, during the quarantine of Spring 2020, it could be anywhere in the world; any city. It’s a snapshot of darkness before the clearing of the clouds, forecasting the waves of possibilities.
Of the video, Supercool Dude and longtime friend of East Portland Blog, Joe Reineke comments, “A friend came to me (Ernie Sapiro) and asked to use our song for a photo montage ‘day of’ in Seattle. He said this music would be a perfect fit for it as it has both dark and hopeful aspects to it. We hadn’t planned to do a video for this track, but it seemed like the timing was perfect.”
Released in 2019, 1 Verse positioned Society of the Silver Cross as one of the most interesting bands in the international gothic scene, including a successful tour of Mexico which garnered them significant press throughout the country.
Society Of The Silver Cross is working on their second album, which will continue to expand the band’s experimental sound with high doses of folk, industrial, post-punk, Oriental music, and anything that crosses their path; the journey to spiritual balance is just beginning.
