Morgan Joanel may seem to some to be almost over-creative, but if you ask her; it’s all connected, flowing in one big artistic loop, with music at the heart of it. The new single, Looking To Be Found, co-produced with WAMI Award winning Dave Parkin (Abbe May, Tired Lion), highlights the smokey, honey-toned vocals she’s known for and mixes them with a melancholic soundscape that somehow uplifts in this dichotomy of power and vulnerability. Upon hearing the music alongside her visual art, Joanel doesn’t need to try and convince you it’s all connected, that’s just something that speaks for itself. The Perth-based looping artist and songwriter has a form of synesthesia that goes way beyond seeing just colours with music; it stretches out into vivid imagery and cinematic storylines.
“When I’m looking for a drum sound I’ll say it’s got to sound like a train underwater, or feel like twilight on a deserted island. My music is the soundtrack to an alternate dimension where I pull all my creativity from, that’s why it’s connected”.
And now, the innovative musician is inviting viewers to experience the same kind of connection by having them participate in an interactive artpiece that will take place during an online concert in March. During the livestream, viewers will download a special template to add their own artistic expression to which will then be turned into a video, spliced together with original music from the concert. With touring plans on hiatus, Joanel is harnessing the power of streaming to curb the feelings of isolation and to open up about her own journey with mental health and healing through the arts.
The alt-pop artist is looking forward to bringing her evocative live show to a global audience. A show that has already landed her main support slots for international superstars including Adam Lambert, Jason Derulo, Newton Faulkner (UK) and Anne-Marie (UK), Jeff Martin (Tea Party) and Katy Steele.
LOOKING TO BE FOUND is out now. Listen on all streaming platforms.
