“This song (“We Are Not Soldiers”) speaks about what it means to be a woman in today’s world. In particular grappling with being a black woman and society’s expectation on us to be strong all the time. This perception of perpetual strength can be damaging and is part of why you’ll find black women on the front lines of most fights for justice, being left to fix problems we did not create. It also contributes to black women being 5x more likely to die during childbirth, because our pain is often ignored. I’ll be sharing more on this topic in the coming days because it’s important to me. I’ll also be sharing the music video too, which probably will do a much better job of telling this story than I could ever do with words alone.” – Kima Otung
