Suicidality Expertly Dramatized: Portland Band Marble Premieres Haunting “red room” Official Video

Here is the long-awaited and, frankly, quite great, official video for “red room.” a song by Southeast Portland band, Marble. Lonely echoing guitars, femme vocals both lovely and frustrated, and images of modern day service industry disconnection and disaffection present a sad and pained beauty in this audio meditation on depression and hope.

“red room” is the first song from Marble’s upcoming full-length the shadow in me, which will be released on July 15. Mixed by Brandon Eggleston (Wye Oak, Modest Mouse, The Mountain Goats, Dandy Warhols, etc), produced by Jonah Cohen, and mastered by Ed Brooks (REM, Death Cab for Cutie, Minus the Bear, Fleet Foxes, Pearl Jam, etc). MARBLE– Chantel Bailey and Matthew Blount– recorded the vast majority of the single/album in their basement studio during the pandemic.

Matthew wrote “red room” after conversing with someone very dear to him. “This person told me that they had been thinking of ending their life,” says Matthew. “I remember sitting in a packed room and feeling like I was completely out of my body. This is a song about hope and love just as much as it’s a song about depression and sadness. My hope is that anyone who hears this song is reminded of the people who are most important to them and how much they love them. Tell them.”

Here is how Marble describes their band’s genesis:

“Slow-falling through a decade of futile relationships, unstable living conditions, and hollow acts of self preservation, songwriter and guitarist, Chantel Bailey stumbled out of the shadows and into her own with nothing but a handful of honest, autobiographical songs and open hands to the great unknown. In 2016, she met Matthew Blount, a closeted guitarist for over a decade, and the missing thread. Within the paper thin bleached walls of a northwest apartment dusted by the cold salt spray of the Pacific Ocean, the band MARBLE was born.”
