Today, West Australian singer-songwriter Sam McGovern releases his new single ‘Memory’ on the back of his tour around Australia for the first time.
Honing his skills at West Australia’s prestigious WAAPA (West Australian Academy of Performing Arts), Sam began his musical career from humble beginnings. Upon graduating in 2020, the 22 year old began his career as an artist releasing his debut single ‘Grow’. Recently selling out Perths’ destination venue Mojos he packed up and jet set across Australia with Jordy Maxwell supporting him at a number of venues and locations across four states.
After his debut single was nominated for West Australian Music (WAM) song of the year 2021 his next chapter threw him well and truly into the spotlight. This year, Sam was a part of season 11 of The Voice and was lauded by Jessica Mauboy and Keith Urban as an artist to watch. Shaking the label of a commercialised tv singer, Sam has stayed true to what has made him authentic and ‘Memory’ sits neatly as his best material to date.
When asked what the song reflects about him Sam says:
“I’d love this song to reflect my intimacy as a songwriter. I really love to dive deep into my feelings and express them through my craft.” – Sam McGovern
The slowness of ‘Memory’ is met with a deliberate approach of lyrical intimacy while still stimulating an emotional response with a big and bold chorus. It doesn’t take long to get into the eb and flow of the song’s energy and Sam delivers a very strong performance. The themes of breakup, moving on and coming of age are all tightly woven together and when asked about what the song is about Sam shares…
“I recently went through a hard & heavy breakup knowing I would be moving out of my home state soon. This hit like a tonne of bricks and I wanted to write a song that dives deeper into questions of who I am now and what I was for so long and I hope it connects.” – Sam McGovern
Sam McGovern has graduated from a prestigious arts college, nominated for WAM Song of the Year 2011 and been mentored by Keith Urban on national TV. He has also sold out venues in Perth and supported Jordy Maxwell across a national tour all before turning 23. Watch his career unfold as he follows in the footsteps of artists like Kim Churchll, Angus Stone & Vance Joy into Australian songwriting royalty.
