Valiant Women releases March 3, via Bathtub Music
New Orleans born and bred singer-songwriter Jenn Howard’s aptly-titled sophomore release, Valiant Women, is a profile in courage. The 10-song album of Americana-soul boldly chronicles a phoenix rising story to self-possession and artistic autonomy. “This body of work showcases what it was like for me to be a woman searching to discover myself again after losing footing in my hopes and dreams,” Jenn says.
Jenn’s aesthetic draws from the second line swagger of her beloved hometown’s brass and funk band heritages, and the storytelling traditions of country and folk. Jenn’s powerhouse pipes and sensually expressive vocals have garnered her favorable comparisons to Etta James and Susan Tedeschi. Previously Jenn released her debut album, Up at Night (2009). From the ages of 16-21, Jenn was the vocalist, co-founder, and co-songwriter in Project NIM and made three albums with the buzzed-about group that featured three future members of The National.
Valiant Women is a revelatory song cycle that winds through brassy vintage soul, stately folk balladry, funky bluesy wailing, and bold vulnerability. Along for the ride are NOLA icons past and present, including Crescent City royalty Ivan Neville and members of Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes.
