Grace Carter – Riot, Bloodwar

Grace Carter declares, “This song is about injustice. I’m so proud of what myself and the director Priya Ahluwalia have created. It was important to me that this video wasn’t dark, I wanted it to be uplifting. So much of what we see in the media when it comes to Black people is linked to trauma and suffering but I don’t think that’s a fair representation of what being Black really means. It is also about community, unity and lifting each other up. I had the amazing honour of being able to share the screen with Bass Note Collective for this one and i honestly had goosebumps the whole time we shot together. This song is about coming together and collectively using our voices to make a change. The lyrics of this song seem to be made relevant time and time again, we still have a long way to go. I hope this one makes you feel something.”
Grace Carter says of this song, “This video tells the story of a parent and child relationship. The father is playing a piano which symbolises the control that he has over the child and willingness he has to play with their emotions. In the second half of the video the two characters leave frame and I sit at the piano and play out the rest of the song. This represents the reclaiming of power and control over my own life. ‘You took my youth for weakness but I’m not a child no more, ill give you forgiveness but I’m not a fool’. This song means a lot to me and I hope you love it as much as I do!”
