Following a string of recent releases — including a cover of The Rolling Stones‘ “Beast Of Burden, “We Got To Get Together To Be Free,” “Gambler’s Prayer,” and “Cry Cry Cry” — now, BabyJake announces the arrival of his long-awaited brand new LP, Aren’t We Ever Gonna Be More Than Friends?, due July 28 via all DSPs.
To celebrate his LP announcement today, BabyJake additionally shares a new cut from the record, “Brown.” As he wrote on the lengthy writing process behind the track, as well as its thematic inspiration:
“Really, what happened with this song is that I wrote the bass line 2 years ago. I always loved it and felt this James Brown esque funk to it (a bit slower, but still). We recorded the whole band at Jon’s house and we had the instrumental done for 2 months or so and I kept putting off the lyrics, putting off the lyrics, putting off the lyrics over and over…I’d make an excuse or this or that or whatever. But finally, we got to it and it was like, ‘well, Jake this is the last song on the project and you still haven’t written the lyrics,’ so I said ‘well, shit mate, ya got me in a chokehold here don’t ya?’
That day, in 30 minutes, I wrote the song in the studio. I always had the first line ‘Strung Along’ and from that, you could go any direction, it could really mean so many things. But for some reason, my brain immediately said to make it about Heroin. And Boom…I had the storyline. A song about a city in which heroin was destroying it little by little (which is happening to a lot of our country right now…maybe not as much needles as it used to be, but opioids are a HUGE addiction problem right now).
A lot of my songs actually don’t come from real experiences or places; some of them are just stories but actually end up being very real topics and concepts. I don’t do that on purpose, it just happens. Other times, my songs are the most personal shit you’ve ever heard (such as ‘Drain My Sewage Pipe’ on my new album). The tag line ‘They Can’t Stop The Brown’ came into my head naturally as the post hook instrumental part entered while I was on the microphone. I came up with it in that moment, but the more I think about it. the more I knew my brain was relating it a bit to ‘Brown Sugar’ from the Stones.”
Listen to BabyJake’s newest release, “Brown,” out now. Stay tuned for his forthcoming LP, out July 28 via all DSPs.
To support his forthcoming LP, BabyJake is heading out on a string of headlining tour dates, set to begin this September.
Speaking on the tour, he wrote: “There’s nothing more genuine to me than being on stage performing my own songs that somehow became popular enough to wrangle up a crowd, but I can’t really fathom the thought of headlining an entire North America tour… But here I am announcing an entire North America tour… So put your cowboy boots & bell bottoms on & get ready to get rowdy, cause I can’t help but ask – Aren’t We Ever Gonna Be More Than Friends?”
