Argentine pianist/composer Julián Solarz reimagines the chamber music of minimalist Spanish composer Frederico Mompou in upcoming album, out on ears&eyes Sept. 29th

Julián Solarz’ group plays a transversal sound that moves between the language of jazz, the rhythmic roots of Afro-American folklore, the intimate atmosphere of tango and certain minimalist structures in contemporary music. It is instrumental music with an essential axis in harmonic textures and melodic development, both from composition and from improvisation, that proposes to extend the scope of jazz sonority to other fields of popular music and to its limit.

Mompou’s work is part of the fundamental artistic movement of the Catalan Renaixença alongside the names of Gaudí, Dalí, Verdaguer or Casals at the beginning of the 20th century. Generally associated with Impressionism or Minimalism, his work as a composer did not point to a pure and evident “folklorism” but rather to a subtle, intimate and, at times, silent inner voice (a reflection of his well-known shyness) that interacted with his time and his place. Famed composer Erik Satie was a big influence.
