Grammy-nominated artist, DJ and producer TOKiMONSTA returns today with the beautifully tragic “Eats The Tale” featuring labelmate Rochelle Jordan, out now via TOKiMONSTA’s own Young Art Records. With an elevated sound, the two artists preside over the track with a heightened awareness to the fragility of the moment. A bold combination of somber lyrics and beats fused for the dance floor, “Eats The Tale” sees TOKiMONSTA and Jordan lamenting the disappearance of the object of their affection, masked by the uptempo energy in the production.
From TOKi: “The concept visually is like that of an ouroboros, a serpent eating its own tail. However, I’ve done a pun where it’s about eating your own tale (a story). Many times we consume false stories/make believe/lies, not realizing those stories eventually consume us until we disappear. Our sense of self is gone since we chose to believe in ‘tales.’ Beautiful, but tragic – the things we believe to make us feel better, but it’s worse for us in the end.”
With the release comes a metaphorical music video that encapsulates the song’s narrative of self-cannibalization. Two versions of each artist exist – one false and one true – but only one can continue in perpetuity. The video serves as commentary on both the topic of the music and the threat AI poses to humanity, a reality that significantly impacts the work of both artists. Directed by Lucy Snow, the video builds on TOKiMONSTA’s strong visual record, a true asset in the song’s zeitgeist.
TOKiMONSTA’s first new music of 2023 follows a string of recent highs; last week winning Best Remix / Edit at DJ Mag’s Best of North America awards for Sia “Manchild (TOKiMONSTA Remix)”, the recent commercial release of her official remix for David Bowie and ahead of upcoming festival appearances and a 19 date tour across the US supporting Odesza that kicks off August 30th at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, OH – see full list of dates below . “Eats The Tale” serves as the first collaboration with label mate Rochelle Jordan, who resides on TOKiMONSTA’s Young Art Records. From overcoming a debilitating medical condition to returning triumphantly to the spotlight, the Korean-American trailblazer will forever continue to innovate within her craft and solidify her status as a standout creative and entrepreneur of her time. TOKiMONSTA continues to deftly remain between the tastemaker and dance world, with each release pushing the limits and in turn leading to a phenomenal career as one of the top producers of the moment. With more to come soon, TOKiMONSTA aims to ascend to all new altitudes.
