Spunsugar is releasing their new track, ‘White Sneakers’, the latest instalment from their upcoming new album A Hole Forever, via Adrian Recordings on 3rd November 2023, paired with an artsy music video. Forthcoming sophomore album set for release on 17th November 2023.
‘White Sneakers’ references a one-sided love affair whose defining feature was their white basketball shoes. It follows the same introspective themes as the previous singles, delving into the dense topics of love, loss, and life. ‘White Sneakers’, in a sentence, is a daydream about someone, only to be suddenly aware of how it might not be appropriate. The soft guitar and synth riff represent the narrator’s naivety, only to be interrupted by the verse – awoken to a guitar so distorted it sounds like something is breaking.
“This might be the sexiest song we’ve done? It’s still sad though, don’t worry,” Spunsugar said. “At its core, a love song. Even sappier, it’s about unrequited love. About longing for someone close to you that you shouldn’t long for and the shame that comes with it. That’s where the dichotomy comes in, both lyrically and musically. A cool piece of trivia: ‘White Sneakers’ started as a cover of ‘Carrie’ by Europe, but it’s changed significantly since then. Don’t sue us, Joey Tempest.”
The coinciding music video follows in the same vein as their ‘San Jose’ flick; artsy, vintage, and timeless with a false sense of swagger. The lighthearted imagery juxtaposes the not-so lightheartedness of the lyrics, aiming to evoke teenage heartache and small town industrial poetry, but with a hint of self awareness and silliness. Growing up farmer offsprings, bible belt kids of fundamentalists and trailer trash in small towns of Sweden, Spunsugar are based in Malmö, Sweden and consists of band members Cordelia Moreau, Elin Ramstedt and Felix Sjöström. Each member carries a separate musical background, creating a melting pot of their distinct influences. Some of the group’s most cherished artists are Cocteau Twins, Red House Painters, Hole, Electric Youth, Ramones, and Misfits.
Spunsugar dropped their critically acclaimed debut album Drive-Through Chapel in 2020 and an EP Things That I Confuse in 2021, leading to an abundance of media support from Steve Lamacq at BBC Radio 6 Music, The Independent, The Line of Best Fit, Nothing but Hope and Passion, and more. The ensemble has released three singles from A Hole Forever thus far: ‘Skin Unwell’ on 14th June, ‘It Never Gave Me Anything’ on 18th August, and ‘San Jose’ on 29th September 2023, setting the tone for the band’s impending electrifying second album. Spunsugar’s new LP A Hole Forever will further discuss dense topics and expose the realities of coming to terms with internal shame. The album tackles themes about getting older and confessing dark secrets with the mindset that life is a slow death.
Spunsugar’s new single and music video ‘White Sneakers’ will be released on 3rd November 2023 ahead of their sophomore album A Hole Forever on 17th November 2023.
