HAHA is a new electro-indie-pop duo featuring Maria Taylor (Azure Ray) and Mike Bloom (Jenny Lewis, Julian Casablancas, Richard Edwards). Today the band is excited to release their second single “No Promises,” out now on Maria Taylor’s Flower Moon Records. The track debuted this week at Atwood Magazine and is streaming at YouTube and on all digital platforms.
Atwood Magazine on the track, “Listening to HAHA’s sophomore single, we feel a nostalgia for a night that may or may not have ever existed. The duo invite us to dance the night away in ‘No Promises,’ a cathartic, captivating, and carefree indie pop anthem full of midnight heat and raw passion.”
On the song, HAHA’s Mike Bloom says, “It’s about diving into beauty, while also exploring our tendency towards self-destructive behaviors, and navigating the ripples that are sure to follow.”
“We had a slightly different approach with this one, taking each of our melodies and weaving them together, but also making sure to keep the retrospective aesthetic,” Maria Taylor adds. “Our previous single (‘Only Gets Better’) made me want to take a long summer drive with the windows down and this song makes me want to dance.”
Both singles feature drums by Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello, Elliott Smith, Lucinda Williams).
Fresh off of Taylor’s role playing drums for Bright Eyes on their current world tour, HAHA’s debut single “Only Gets Better” was released on June 14, 2023, a “synthy, propulsive indie rock track.” (Brooklyn Vegan)“‘Only Gets Better’ sees the duo trying on a sleek and anthemic style of synth-pop… It’s a new sound for both artists, but one that they inhabit well, offering a track that feels like an ‘80s throwback imbued with the urgency of aughts indie rock” (Under the Radar). The track was praised by NPR, Nic Harcourt, and more.
