As Part of Cat Power’s Band
Today, New York singer-songwriter Arsun announced Babe I Hear Thunder In Your Heart, his debut full length album, due for release in the winter of 2024. To accompany the announcement, he shared a new video for “On The Dark Water’s Edge,” as heard in a recent campaign by French luxury fashion house Yves Saint Laurent. Complete with mournful fiddles and a churning country ballad rhythm, the track was inspired by the traditional tune “Cluck Ol’ Hen” and the record Foc’sle Songs and Shanties sung by Paul Clayton. For an even deeper dive into the inspiration behind the song, Arsun has created a special “On The Dark Water’s Edge” playlist here.
The video maintains the song’s use of vintage recording practices, with director Tasmin Meyer Ersahin drawing inspiration from urban pastorals like Wim Wenders’ The American Friend and Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets to provide a fittingly understated, yet rich filmic companion.
Arsun has already established himself as an artist in demand; earlier this week he performed “Like A Rolling Stone” on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon as part of Cat Power’s band in support of her Bob Dylan covers album, Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert. Arsun will play his next solo set at NYC’s The Knitting Factory at Baker Falls on November 25th alongside Brion Starr and Julia Cumming. Tickets are available here.
Arsun’s own latest project is his debut album due in early 2024, a nine-track affair entitled Babe I Hear Thunder In Your Heart. Combining his love for classic acts like the Velvet Underground and The Rolling Stones with a modern ear for melody, Arsun seeks to form his own vision of the past. Largely produced with vintage audio equipment, and often featuring single full band live takes, he has built a collection of songs that hum with the warmth and live sound you would expect to hear as the stylus falls on a Desire-era Dylan vinyl. By adding wrinkles and variations unique to his era to the rather daunting high bar set by the icons that came before him, Arsun has combined his admiration of the past with an anticipation of what is on the horizon.
Situating himself in the grand tradition of NYC troubadours, the 25-year-old Arsun Sorrenti seeks to blend classic rock with a fresh voice. A New York native with a deeply artistic and creative familial background, Arsun has been releasing music since 2018. Soon after his first release, he was tapped to tour with Chan Marshall, AKA Cat Power. He has spent the last five years touring across America and Europe opening for her at venues such as Royal Albert Hall in London, Webster Hall in New York City, The Sydney Opera House, and many more. Recently, Arsun appeared on rhythm guitar for her new record Cat Power sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert.
