His Second Song of 2023 Following “Hope You’re Hungover”

November 17, 2023: Today, Los Angeles-based artist Cale Tyson released his second single from his upcoming pop country project, “City Girl,” a quippy country bop that combines the witty lyricism he’s honed over the last decade with contemporary country sounds he experimented with alongside producer Misha Hercules. Tyson also released an official video for the song he directed himself.

About the new single, Tyson explains: “‘City Girl’ was written as a take on people who fetishize the cowboy aesthetic without having the authenticity to back it up. Living in LA, I see a lot of people who dress like rednecks, but have lived in Hollywood suburbs their whole life. Personally, I don’t really care – I think everyone should do what they want, dress how they want, etc. Gatekeeping a cultural style has always annoyed me, but I do think it’s a funny phenomenon – something I didn’t expect when I moved here from Nashville.”

“City Girl” is Tyson’s second single release following a string of indie folk releases over the last few years and his first country release since his 2017 breakthrough Careless Soul. The music video was directed by Tyson and inspired by true events. He explains, “With the importance of Tik-Tok weighing heavy on upcoming musicians these days, I wanted to poke fun at it. I consider myself too old for the platform and have been hesitant to give it a good try – partly due to laziness, partly due to potential addiction.”

“I worked with an extremely small crew of good friends on this video, and we were able to knock it all out in just two days. Andrea Adolph (of Bambina) plays the Tik-Tok dance instructor and just totally knocked it out of the park. It took me roughly nine hours to learn the dance, and I still couldn’t nail it.”

“City Girl” follows the release of “Hope You’re Hungover,” which was praised by American SongwriterFlaunt and Rolling Stone who named it a “Song You Need To Know.”

In terms of the new musical direction, Tyson explains, “I’m tired of taking myself too seriously and trying to be perceived in any sort of self-constructed way. I’m more so just having fun with my life these days, and I think the music I’m making now reflects that. Once you stop searching for who you are, you get this freedom to be whoever you really want to be.”
